Spyware is a software that installs itself onto a person's computer without the user's consent. Once the spyware has been successfully installed it will monitor the user's surfing habit's for marketing purposes. Some of the more malicious spyware will collect your keystrokes, collecting your personal information and credit card numbers. The best thing you can do to protect yourself is to change your online behavior.Here are some do's and don'ts.

  • Don't download stuff from P2P (file-sharing) networks, they are notorious for spyware.
  • Don't click on everything you see, pop ups can contain spyware
  • Don't open email attachments and don't click on links in your email
  • Create a limited user account, and use it for your day to day needs
  • Stay away from the dark side of the web, porn sites are well known to carry spyware
  • Windows Xp has firewall built in, make sure it is turned on. ( Go to Start, settings, control panel, firewall )
  • Get the latest Microsoft Updates, turn on automatic updates
  • Get the latest updates for your web browser
  • Don't use pirated software
  • Do some research before downloading free software, some of these software are supported by adware/spyware that's how they can afford to give them away for free
  • And the most important thing you can do to avoid spyware and adware is get yourself a good Spyware Removal Tool

At least 60% of home PCs are infected with spyware, here is a list of common symptoms of spyware.

  • pop-up windows keep appearing
  • sudden change in computer speed performance.
  • your homepage has changed
  • new icons on your desktop or Windows system tray ( lower right hand corner of your screen near the clock)
  • you get redirected to a website you didn't type in
  • new entry in your Favorites folder
  • new toolbar on you web browser that you didn't install
